FISHING FOR JOBS

Hello! Welcome to the "Fishing for Jobs" webpage!

This webpage is part of the "Access to Work and Social Protection Project" initiated in 2016 by the Human Rights and Migration Law Clinic (HRMLC) in Turin, which is a legal education activity offered by the Law Departments of the University of Turin and the University of Eastern Piedmont and the International University College of Turin in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva and the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin.

The project  is the work of a group of students and professors who want to promote the more just and equitable treatment of migrants and refugees in the workplace. We hope you'll be able to find useful information about different aspects of this issue.

Our name "Fishing for Jobs", is inspired by a common proverb:

"give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime"

We began this project because we saw a clear need to connect asylum seekers looking for jobs, to the information and resources already available. We hope that you will be able to use this site as a tool to help you understand the basics of finding a job in Italy. The idea of providing you with tools, as opposed to "solutions", is our main aim.

This site builds upon the work of HRMLC students of previous years, who conducted a series of interviews with migrants (mainly asylum seekers), to learn about the difficulties that they face when integrating into Italian society. It is our hope that it will help to establish even better communication between the hosting centers and the asylum seekers  we met during our clinical period.

We are eager to support you in any way, and any feedback is welcome. We want to hear from you!

The students involved in the project in 2018 are:

Javi
Political Science and Arts student from Argentina. He believes in using politics as a tool to transform realities. He strives to empower others in his work.

Lori
Food Politics student from California. She is particularly interested in the intersection between food and race, which often includes migration. She is a passionate believer in using food as a platform for change, as well as a tool to fight against hate.

Martina
European Legal Studies student from Italy. She developed a great interest in migration issues during her course of study and through her social commitment. A dream for her future: contributing to the construction of a fairer and more humane asylum system.

Giuseppe
Law student at the University of Naples "Federico II". He has always analysed law through a critical approach, linking academic researches with topical events. He believes law is a tool rather than a purpose; notably a powerful tool for social advancement.

Mirko
Law student from the University of Turin, Italy. He has a deep interest in the new legal challenges arising from globalization, such as migration. He is convinced that the study of law can help you better understand the reality of what surrounds you.

Said
Law student from Ankara, Turkey. He worked through legal firms until he arrived at the International University College in Turin. He explains his thoughts on the migration issues in Italy (especially social protection of migrants) thusly, "the problem here in Italy is not lack of knowledge but lack of communication and the transfer of it".

Lamin
Student of the Master of Law (LLM) in Comparative Law, Economics and Finance in Turin. His joining the clinic was greatly influenced by his own childhood growing up away from home during the 11-year civil war in his native Sierra Leone.

Daiana
Law Student from Italy. Her experience as a migrant herself in Italy brought her to think about ways and tools to help fellow migrants. She strongly believes in the power of information to provide people with access to their rights.

In 2018 the project has been supervised by Ulrich Stege, Elena Corcione and Emanuela Roman
