BORSA LAVORO

Finding a job is always difficult, but it can be even more so in a new country!

One of the best (and easiest!) things you can do to make your job search more successful, is to get to know as many people as you can! You will be surprised by how much others are willing to help. Try going to different events in your city -- there are many that are just for newcomers like yourself. Spending time learning to communicate in Italian and getting to know your new hometown is very important. So keep yourself updated on the activities and events organised in the neighborhood where you live, and stay aware of social resources that are available to you!

If you have access to the internet, Google and Facebook can be your greatest ally in this search! For some ideas in the city of Turin try typing: Arte Migrante Torino, Centro Interculturale della Città di Torino, Casa del Quartiere di Torino.

One of the things you might find in your search for information on working in Italy, is something called a Borsa Lavoro.

Borsa Lavoro is a period of training, similar to an internship, during which a young person works in a company in order to acquire the basic skills of the job. You can think of it as a type of Work Scholarship that some employers might find convenient to take advantage of. Importantly though, the Borsa Lavoro is something that is provided by a Sponsor Organization, and not necessarily something that all potential employers may know about.

That's why it's up to you to make potential employers aware of how convenient a Borsa Lavoro could be!

This type of internship is regulated by regional and municipal rules and has the following characteristics:

  • Expected Duration: 3 months, and renewable for a further 3 months (with the possibility, though not ensured, of being employed at the end of this "training period").

  • Weekly Time Commitment: 20, 30 or 40 hours.

  • Expected Fulfillment by the Company:
    • Third party liability insurance
    • INAIL workplace injury insurance against accidents
    • UniLav communication, in online mode
    • Medical examination
  • Salary due: the Company you end up working for is not the one that pays your salary. A reimbursement is paid to you, the worker, by the Sponsor Organization of the project.

Interested in activating a Borsa Lavoro work scholarship for yourself?

For instance Ufficio Pastorale Migranti (UPM) in Turin is in charge of preparing the necessary documents. However, sometimes there can be a person at your hosting centre that can help you with this!

Here are the contacts of some of the Sponsor Organizations:

Sometimes, you will be able to contact employers directly about the possibility of accepting you through the Borsa Lavoro program. In this case, just ask the UPM or your hosting centre whether they can provide you with a Borsa Lavoro. They can help you with the technical aspects of the process like documents, formal agreements with the employer and the like.
